Wraeclast and the exile

Every craft in Path of Exile 1 starts with a person in a bad place. That person is an exile. This page tells where the exile comes from, and where the exile goes.

The dark continent

Wraeclast is a continent that has been broken more than once. Old peoples lived here, and the ruins of their power still stand in the rain.

The Vaal found gems of great power under a mountain. They grew proud and reached for eternal life. Their own pursuit brought a disaster that ended them.

After the Vaal came an empire. Its capital was Sarn. Later rulers made the strange arts of thaumaturgy and the power gems part of daily life. A purity rebellion rose against that. The thaumaturgists burned, and the empire died in a second cataclysm.

Under the high ground of Highgate lies the Beast. It is the source of that old power. Tales say the Beast played its part in the second fall.

Oriath

One island city was spared. Oriath kept its walls, its templars and its law. The law banned thaumaturgy and punished it.

Oriath had a problem. It had many people it no longer wanted. So it sent them away to Wraeclast, the place of its own fear.

The exile

An exile is someone Oriath cast out. Oriath condemned them, and the ship took them across the water. The exile lands in a place that was not built for survivors.

There are seven kinds of exile in the story:

  • The Marauder, who fights with strength.
  • The Ranger, who fights from a distance with speed.
  • The Witch, who learns what Oriath forbade.
  • The Duelist, a fighter of strength and speed.
  • The Templar, who still keeps a trace of faith.
  • The Shadow, who works with speed and wit.
  • The Scion, the rare one who stands at the centre of everything.

Each one walks the same ruined road. Each one needs gear to survive it, and that is where a craft begins. We say little about the gear here. That part of the story is left for later.

Why a craft is a hard choice

An exile has little to spend. A craft spends it in steps, and every step has a chance of going wrong. Some exiles have a good plan. Some run out of means before the item is done.

That is the reason these tools exist. The Craft Planner shows the routes to an item and what each one costs, so the choice is yours and the cost is not a surprise. The Craft Helper stays beside you during the real craft, one step at a time.

A fan tool

Craft Planner is an unofficial fan tool. Grinding Gear Games has not made it, endorsed it or approved it. The story on this page is a short retelling in our own words. The tools send nothing to the game, and you perform every action yourself.
